Well, is there an external hard drive that could be shared between Mac and Windows PC? Of course, there is. Actually, most external hard disks could be compatible with Mac and PC as long as you format them correctly. Why Need to Format External Hard Drive for Mac and PC To put it simply, if you want to share external hard drive between Mac and PC, you need to format an external hard drive for Mac and PC. Currently, hard drives for Windows PC are always formatted with NTFS, while hard disks for Mac are formatted with HFS+. However, when we connect a NTFS formatted disk to Mac, Mac OS X doesn't allow us to write files to the drive neither edit files, though it can read a NTFS drive. Similarly, Windows OS will ask us to format the HFS+ formatted drive when we connecting such a disk, let along edit files saved on HFS+ formatted hard disks unless we resort to third party programs. It will also save time after the calibration, but for older generations (prior to 1980) or the executive white male types with little patience, it will make your employees and/or yourself miserable during that time to put to use at work. For newer millenial generations inundated with files, this will work well. Specifically, if you are operating with 20+ or more files either in work or school for commonly complex procedures (such as billing for Medicare with 20 different types of products and/or 500 codes with unique details for each to deal with) or a master program with 2 years of notes to keep organized for reference, this is a great tool to use to click between the files and actually read them again quickly (the alternative is all in MS Word documents that need at least 10 seconds to load between each one). If you have a set of files such as myself at 300 files, you will benefit from this ultra-organization tool. The improvements needed include more reliable syncing, and making load times be as fast as possible per each opening of the app on MacBook or Apple device (iPad and iPhone). Also, making the MS Word tools for making grids, or bringing in an Excel file too, would be nice. The PDF import prints are extremely useful. Microsoft today that it's opening signups for an early preview of Skype Translator, a real-time language translation feature that it at Re/code's Code Conference. While the will be limited to customers who own a Windows 8.1 computer or tablet, Microsoft is open to bringing Skype Translator to other platforms in the future. The preview program will be free and will initially be available for Windows 8.1 computers and tablets only, and will kick-off with a limited selection of languages. That said, as part of the sign-up process, you'll have the chance to tell us which languages are important to you, what platforms you'd like to see added, and how you plan to use Skype Translator once it becomes available. Skype Translator Pro is an advanced software application designed to translate Skype chat messages in real time. It comes loaded with several intuitive options that can be figured out by all user. We look forward to this feedback, as it will help enhance future releases. In a May demo of the, a Skype employee conducted a conversation with a German-speaking colleague, with Skype providing real-time translation from German to English and vice versa. While the translation software did not perform perfectly, audience members at the time said its translation capabilities were 'pretty good.' Microsoft also demoed the feature at its Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, showing off somewhat more polished translation capabilities. According to Microsoft, Skype Translator continually improves as it translates text back and forth from one language to another. The german translation is complete nonsense. Random words, wrong grammar, impossible to understand. This is the worst translation I've ever seen, every $1 iPhone app does a better job. Yeah, the very first English phrase in the embedded video ('Good afternoon Melanie') is translated as: 'But after new Melanie' (or their respective counterparts in German where they don't make any more sense than they do in English). Essentially the translator parsed the English phrase as four separate words and translated them one by one. It misunderstood the 'good' as 'but', got the 'after' correct and again misunderstood the 'noon' as 'new'. Well, and it understood the last word as being a name that doesn't need translation. The German sentences Just for fun, here are the German sentences the software created, translated back into English: Original: 'Good afternoon, Melanie. How are you?' Output: 'But after new Melanie. How are you?' Original: 'Sorry, Melanie, say that again.' Output: 'Melanie, say that again.' Original: 'Very well, thank you. I'm here at the Worldwide Partner Conference with 16.000 partners, on the big stage. So: No pressure.' Output: 'Well, thank you. I'm here, but world-wide partner conference with 16.000 Palm OS on the big stage. So, no pressure.' Original: 'Yes, I did see the world cup. Congratulations' Output: 'Yes, I did see the congratulations for the World Cup.' Original: 'Very funny, Melanie. I'm more of a cricket fan.' Output: 'You full, Melanie. The OS X Preview app is a great way to view PDFs on your Mac, to the point where many users over more powerful software like. And using Preview to view PDFs is simple, too, with the intuitive interface making it fairly easy to change your viewing preferences, combine documents, and even rearrange existing pages. But what if you want to extract a page from a PDF and save it as its own separate document? It’s not quite clear how to do that in Preview, but that’s what we’re here for. So read on to see how you can extract one or more pages from an existing PDF and save them as a new document. For this tutorial, we’re using a sample PDF of the. This is a huge 361-page document, and we want to extract just a single page — page 235, which lists Sabres career records — so that we can email it to someone without having to send them the entire document. There are two methods for extracting one or more pages from a PDF document in Preview. The first, something we call the “Drag and Drop Method,” is quick and dirty, but doesn’t give you much control over how the file is saved or modified. The second, let’s unofficially label it the “New Document Method,” is a bit more detailed, but lets you modify how and where the new file is saved, along with some other potentially important options. To edit PDFs. Preview is available on all Mac computers in the Tech Lab. You will see thumbnails of each page in the PDF. Click on the thumbnail of the. We’ll start with the New Document method first so that you can understand what’s happening with this process, but if you’re in a hurry, just jump to the second section, below. The New Document Method For both methods of extracting one or more pages from a PDF, our first step is to change to the Thumbnail view in Preview, which will let us select a single page. This is the same view that is useful for deleting or rearranging pages in a PDF document. With Preview selected, head to the OS X Menu Bar and select View > Thumbnails. You can also switch to Thumbnail view by using the keyboard shortcut Option-Command-2. You’ll see a sidebar slide in to the left of your PDF document showing each page individually from top to bottom. Find the page you want to extract and click on its thumbnail to select it. Preview will jump to that page and display it on the right of the window (if you weren’t already navigated to the page previously) and the page’s thumbnail will be surrounded by a gray box in the Thumbnail sidebar. In our example, we’re just extracting a single page from the PDF. If you’d like to extract multiple pages and place them all in a single new document, hold the Shift key and select multiple sequential pages from the thumbnail sidebar, or hold the Command key to select multiple non-sequential pages. With our page(s) selected, we need to copy them to the clipboard, either by selecting Edit > Copy from the Menu Bar, or by using the keyboard shortcut Command-C. Next, we’ll tell Preview to make a new PDF document from the page(s) we just copied, which can be accomplished by selecting File > New From Clipboard in the Menu Bar or by using the keyboard shortcut Command-N. A new Preview window will appear containing the page(s) you copied previously. From here, you can rearrange the pages if desired, or even delete any pages that were copied by accident from the original document. When you’re ready, go to File > Save and save the new PDF file in your desired location. The Drag and Drop Method Now that you understand the extraction process, here’s the faster “Drag and Drop” method, although it comes with some caveats. First, repeat the steps above to change Preview to the thumbnail view, and then select one or more pages from the thumbnail sidebar. Now, simply click on one of the selected pages and drag your cursor outside the bounds of the Preview app. You’ll see a green circle with a ‘plus’ icon appear below your cursor, along with a faint preview of your selected pages. While continuing to hold the mouse or trackpad button, move your cursor over a blank space on your Desktop, or to a location in Finder, and drop the files. A single PDF will appear containing the page(s) you extracted. The file will have the original PDF’s name with “(dragged”) appended to it. From here, you can further modify the file, archive it, or send it on its way to friends and colleagues. Drag & Drop vs. New Document After learning about both ways to extract pages from a PDF document, it appears at first that the “Drag and Drop” method is so much faster (and it is). So then why would anyone use the “New Document” method? The reason that the New Document method of extracting pages from a PDF may be preferable to the quicker Drag and Drop method is that the former allows you to modify the new PDF’s file name, add OS X Finder tags, apply Quartz Filters, or encrypt the file, all during the extraction process. Change the default font in Word for Mac. On the Format menu, click Font, and then click the Font tab. Under Font, click the font you want to use, and then under Size, click the size you want to use for the body text. Click Default in the bottom left corner, and then click Yes to apply the change to all new documents. In Word 2008 for Mac, you can change the font, font size, and style of text, color or text, and even apply special effects to text, such as a shadow. Before you change fonts, you usually have to select text or images you want to modify. Using unique fonts in your documents can be just the extra touch you need to guarantee your memos stand out, your reports look polished, and your flyer conveys your message. While Microsoft Word comes with a number of standard fonts, such as Arial, Courier New, and Times New Roman, you can install new fonts on your computer at any time--and then use those fonts to spice up your Word documents. There are a huge variety of fonts available; whether you're looking for cool fonts, calligraphy fonts, or other font types, there's a font out there for you. The Web is an outstanding resource for finding free fonts in a huge range of styles (see links related to this article for a few great fonts). You also can purchase font libraries on CD or online. Windows supports several different types of fonts including TrueType fonts (TTF,.ttf), OpenType fonts (OTF,.otf), and Type 1 fonts (PFM,.pfm). If you are downloading fonts or are purchasing a font CD, be sure that they are one of these types of fonts, otherwise the fonts may not be recognized by Windows. In my opinion, if you want an excellent deal, check out - you get over 6,500 fonts. When you download a font from a Web site, you will usually download a.zip file, which is a compressed file format that makes the download smaller. You will need to unzip the.zip file before you can add those fonts to your computer.
